[Jun. 15 – Sept. 2] The Augmented Reality War of 1812

On Governors Island visitors with their smart phone, iPad and Android tablets take a self guided augmented reality tour of scenes of the War of 1812. Flaneurs will discover the USRC cutter ACTIVE chase down the smuggler FAIR AMERICAN on the Hudson River, highly inflated bank notes floating over the parade ground, and an American sailor, a tar, shouldering his duffle bag at the ferry landing. This event is part of this year’s New York Electronic Art Festival.

The AR War of 1812 was supported in part by grants by the New York Council for the Humanities and the Lilac Preservation Project. Harvestworks provides on-going support.

This self guided ARt tour is available on your mobile device at all hours everyday until September 2nd. (There is a promotional poster and handouts for the paper dependent at St. Cornelius Chapel, every Saturday & Sunday, Jun 15 through Sep 2, noon to 6pm)

Steve Bull is a mixed-media technology artist with location-specific narratives and games that explore the social, technological, and creative possibilities of cell phones.

Kathleen Hulser is a public historian who manages cultural projects and teaches at the New School in New York City.
