Drums and Drones is the solo project of Brian Chase, drummer for rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs and NYC’s experimental music scene. Inspired initially by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House installation, the Drums and Drones project aims to evoke meditative qualities through the use of resonant tones and sonic subtleties derived from drums and percussion. Drums and Drones: Decade, a retrospective triple album with 144 page book, was released in 2018 on Brian’s own Chaikin Records.
For solo performances of Drums and Drones, Brian features both its acoustic and electronic sides. The acoustic pieces focus on one instrument at a time and the harmonic resonances within the chosen instrument. The electronic pieces are derived from acoustic sources yet use computer software for further harmonic precision to “establish sonic environments of infinite depth within a minimalist design.” In much the same way that this music goes “inside the sound of a drum,” a similar process is reflected in that of the listener through the process of listening.
Matthew D. Gantt’s sound work filters smartphone noise, trap sample packs and modular squelch through twenty-first century indeterminacy and digital pseudo-sensuality.
Inspired in equal parts by John Cage’s chance operations, random MIDI structures, San Fransisco Tape Music Center experiments and Lex Luger’s revolutionary production circa 2010, Gantt reckons with the impossible density of contemporary media by arbitrarily dividing it into three compositions.
BIO For Matthew Gantt
Matthew D. Gantt is an artist and composer based in Troy, NY. His practice focuses on (dis)embodiment in virtual spaces, procedural systems facilitated by idiosyncratic technology, and the recursive nature of digital production and consumption. He has presented or performed at a range of institutional and grassroots venues, including Panoply Performance Laboratory, New Museum, The Stone, Issue Project Room, and internationally at IRCAM (Paris) and Koma Elektronik (Berlin). Gantt releases music with Orange Milk and Oxtail Recordings, teaches extended media and experimental composition through both institutional and grassroots organizations, and worked as a studio assistant to electronics pioneer Morton Subotnick from 2016 – ’18.

Brian Chase is a drummer and composer living in Brooklyn, NY. Hisdiverse range of work includes that with Grammy nominated rock bandYeah Yeah Yeahs, the community of the New York experimental musicscene, and his solo project entitled Drums and Drones. Performancecollaborators range from leading improvisors Zeena Parkins, AnthonyColeman and Catherine Sikora to contemporary classical groups StringNoise and Experiments in Opera to visual artists Ursula Scherrer, ErikZajaceskowski and Keti Kartveli. Presentations of Drums and Drones haveincluded those at arts festivals and venues such as New Ear Festival(Fridman Gallery, NYC), X Avant Festival (Toronto), Constellation(Chicago), National Sawdust (Brooklyn) and Secret Project Robot(Brooklyn). As an educator, Brian was a visiting professor at BenningtonCollege and guest lecturer at So Percussion’s Summer Institute atPrinceton University. Writings have appeared in John Zorn’s Arcanaanthology, Modern Drummer magazine and Talkhouse culture blog.Performer and artist residencies have been held at The Stone andHeadlands Center for the Arts. In 2018, Brian started his own label,Chaikin Records, named after his original family surname.
