FTM is a set of Max externals developed at the IRCAM that eases the handling of complex data structures in the Max/MSP environment. This class, taught by KonicLab’s Alain Baumann (Barcelona), will specially focus on the MnM package included in the library, and have hands-on experiments with included abstraction MnMfollower, which allow us to do real time gesture following when used in combination with sensors, camera analysis, or a wiimote.

When working with physical interaction and using sensor based or camera based interaction, one is confronted with the many possibilities of handling and mapping the incoming information to sound or image generation. One way to extract complex components from sensor devices is to do high level analysis such as pattern recognition. In this class, taught by KonicLab’s Alain Baumann (Barcelona), we will have an overview of the FTM library. FTM is a set of Max externals developed at the IRCAM that eases the handling of complex data structures in the max/MSP environment. We will specially focus on the MnM package included in the library, and have hands-on experiments with included abstraction MnMfollower, which allow us to do real time gesture following when used in combination with sensors, camera analysis, or a wiimote. We will look at the combination between the hardware iXKa developed by conic tetra, a wireless -accelerometer based- motion sensor, and the gesture follower to control sound that will be following our movements, but you are welcome to bring your own sensors, wiimote or other tracking device which you are familiar with.

Alain Baumann is a Barcelona based French composer and musician who has included real time sound interaction in his work using sensor based devices since the late 80s. He has been collaborating with Rosa Sanchez in the Konic thtr since 1992 and together they have created stage pieces and installation works based on interactive audiovisuals that have been seen in Europe, South America and Africa. Alain has been using Max/ MSP as his main tool to develop the creative works of Konic thtr, and working with dancers to interact both with sound and image in real time on stage. As an important part of their activity, Konic thtr is actively contributing to the dissemination of their knowledge, both by teaching in the Ramon Llull University in Barcelona and by giving workshops in many countries of Europe and Central and South America, workshops in which the emphasis is the development of creative languages based on interactive technologies.
