Harvestworks is pleased to share the works of two of our recent artists. Victoria worked with programmer Frank Spigner to create the interface for her sculpture. Meredith Starr is working with programmer Danielle McPhatter to realize her extended reality artworks.

VICTORIA MANGANIELLO
During her Harvestworks Fellowship, Victoria explored the possibilities of conductive threads and soft speakers using embroidery and hand-sewing. In this project update, Victoria will show images and reflections about working with these materials during the pandemic and share plans and inquiries for the future. Conceptually, the project is exploring the relationship between sounds and materials and how the sound of something may or may not influence our cultural understanding of that thing. Textiles are universal, a part of any community or culture around the world. We rarely ask, however, what is the sound of a textile? Is it the sound of the hand that weaves the cloth? The machine that processes the fibers? Or the activities of the person that consumes it? Working together with Harvest Works on this project offered an opportunity to explore the shared origin stories of textiles and technology as a way to explore what is a material? And what is a sound?
Victoria Manganiello is a textile artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Named as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30, Victoria has received multiple internationally recognized grants and residency appointments and has exhibited her work at established museums throughout the USA and internationally. Exploring the intersections between materiality, technology, geography and storytelling, Victoria’s installation work, abstract paintings, and kinetic sculptures are made meticulously with hand-woven textiles using hand-spun yarn and hand-mixed natural and synthetic color dyes alongside mechanical alternatives and modern technologies. Independent Study Artist Meredith Starr will present SPLASH- Diving Into Virtual Reality To Promote Social Change
This presentation discusses Plastic Swim and Plastic Pool– interactive extended reality experiences. These new media artworks combine virtual and augmented reality respectively with a pool of plastic waste consumed by artist Meredith Starr and her family in one year. When engaged in the works, the viewer will find themselves in a glimmering but treacherous game, swiping through an aquatic world dense with plastic. When they have accumulated enough information about plastic consumption by interacting with illuminating debris they can resurface buoyed by the specifics of their newly acquired environmental awareness. In this presentation, Starr will discuss these artworks and the and the experience of creating them as part of the Independent MAX Study Program at Harvestworks. Starr will also discuss the power of extended realities to inspire empathy and awareness about environmental issues.
BIOS
Meredith Starr is a full time professor of visual arts at SUNY Suffolk County Community College. She is the recent recipient of the FATE (Foundations in Art Theory and Education) Emerging Educator Award. Her drawings have been published in Space Out: Memory and Tool Book. She has shown internationally in cities such as the Hague, Hong Kong, and Seoul, and nationally in Chicago, DC, Pasadena, and New York. She recently exhibited Plastic Lakes at Art Lab Tokyo in Japan and her 10,000 Droplets as part of the What We Create May Save Us exhibit at Ejecta Projects in Pennsylvania. Plastic Swim will be exhibited as part of the upcoming exhibit IN THE WEEDS at the Athens Contemporary Institute of Art in Atlanta Georgia in April 2021.
