remnants: sound, substance, and the poesis of decay. Composer and sound installation artist Matthew Goodheart discusses his latest installation remnants. Featuring an expansion of his electroacoustic technique of reembodied sound through the incorporation of bone-conducting headphones, he will discuss the development of the work, the history and nature of transducer-based sonic art, and the aesthetics of disembodied and reembodied sound.

A meditation on fragmentation, decay, and transformation, remnants is designed to be experienced by one person at a time. Each participant wears bone-conducting headphones while moving through a field of broken instruments scattered across the floor. Sound emerges from the instruments and mixes with the sound from the headphones to create an ephemeral and ever-changing sonic environment. A responsive work, movements in the space affect the soundscape in subtle and unrecognizable ways, creating a unique experience for each participant.
In this talk, the artist will contextualize the piece within the history of sound production, electroacousics and his technique of reembodied sound, and the intersection of listening and materiality in an era of social isolation.

Matthew Goodheart is a composer, improviser, sound artist, and educator. Following an early career as a free-jazz pianist in the fertile San Francisco Bay Area, he has developed a wide body of work that explores the relationships between performer, instrument, and listener. His diverse creations range from large-scale microtonal compositions to open improvisations to immersive sound installations – all unified by the analytic techniques and performative methodologies he has developed to bring forth the unique and subtle acoustic properties of individual musical instruments. Goodheart’s approach explores issues of sound in relation to physicality, perception, technology, and cultural ritual. His numerous awards and honors including the Berlin Prize in Music Composition, a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, and a Fulbright Grant. He is an Assistant Professor of Music Composition at Rensselaer Polytechnic University.
