Solstice Sunset Cross-River Bell Ringing
The dailybell project is an aspirational project based on the premise that the rotation of the Earth is an inarguable fact, something we can all agree on.
Anybody who is nearby this Solstice is invited to join us at sunset (8:30 PM) as we cross the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, ringing bells as we go. This is the 3rd year of the project and it’s lovely.
There will be 2 opportunities to celebrate the Summer Solstice this year:
June 20th (the actual Solstice) and
June 21st-– The dailybell is part of Make Music New York again this year – which is in itself part of Make Music Day- a noisy worldwide celebration on the Solstice which began in Paris in 1982.
Brenda Hutchinson and dailybell joins Make Music NY to celebrate the Summer Solstice this year on the 8:29 PM East River Ferry from DUMBO to Wall Street/ Pier 11. Arrive at 8:00 to receive your complimentary bells before boarding the Ferry and celebrate the Solstice with a lovely sprinkling of bells as we cross the East River together.
Time/Place/Ticket/Transit Info (same for both days):
East River Ferry Departs at 8:29 PM from DUMBO to Wall St/Pier 11.
Bring some bells if you have them, or arrive early. (Bells will be distributed until they run out).

Many thanks also to Carol Parkinson and Harvestworks for their support-
Something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree.
The rising and setting of the sun provide two opportunities for a shared acknowledgement of our basic connection to one another and to the natural environment. Now an international community, the dailybell began on New Year’s eve Dec, 31 2007 with the commitment to an ongoing, socially engaged project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crossed the horizon and to the sharing of the awareness of that moment with others by ringing a bell (or many bells together).
This is an invitation to celebrate the Solstice and everyday by pausing with the rising and/or setting sun to reflect and to participate in this possibility.

PRESS QUOTES
“One man stared into my face. What is happening here? he asked, but it was soft, genuine, open. I shrugged, and looked away from him out at the crowd, because there was no other answer.
It was so moving to stand there sweating with everyone, I said to Deb later, so sweet to recognize together that this day is over.
Not just the day (sunset) but the summer, its peak – the longest day over, the light heading now towards its decline and the darker days. Not knowing what they’ll bring, but the peak marked by this strange and specific communal making, by the ringing of so many tiny bells.”
