Kyle Luntz is a Brooklyn-based artist who deals with time, emergent phenomena, illusion and memory in his multimedia installations. He makes generative audio-visual compositions which are altered by the presence and actions of participants. Using sound, light, acoustics, feedback systems, sensors and robotics, his work crosses spatial and temporal dynamics, treating time as malleable material.
While research and technology are embedded in his practice, his interest lies in the poetic potential of interactivity and experimentalism, rather than the media used to facilitate it. He emphasizes a perspective of mutual discovery, intuitive participation and co-authorship as opposed to that of an academic, institutional or technical authority. He believes that the tools and experience of Art should be accessible for all. His own approach to learning about circuitry, coding, music, perception and physics has been largely self-directed, low-cost and open source. For the last 6 years he has collaboratively developed and taught multimedia Art projects with NYC public school youth and teachers, supported the work of fellow Artists and collectives and has cultivated an inclusive approach to creating.

Automatic Harp by Kyle Luntz
How can interactive media such as sensors, microcontrollers, and software be integrated into artistic practice? How does interactive technology enable viewers to guide or be guided through ideas? How do the potential and constraints of technology shape artistic work? This talk will explore tools and approaches for creating generative sonic and visual installations, performances, and objects. It will also examine how these technologies can be leveraged by artists in residence to expand their practice.

- The following tools and techniques (and some of their expressive utilities) will be discussed:
- Multimedia Software: Touch Designer, Pure Data
- Microcontrollers: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Bela, Teensy
- Sensors: LiDAR, Ultrasonic, Gyroscope, Camera
- Actuators: Solenoids, Transducers, LEDs, Motors
- Digital Fabrication: Laser cutters, 3D Printers, Vinyl Cutters, CNC
- Concepts: Generative composition (sonic and visual), Feedback (visual, auditory and social), Time Based Media manipulation (video and audio delay and distortion
- A portion of this talk will be dedicated to discussing how Artists in this program have used these or similar approaches in creating their own work and what they might be interested in exploring next.
