BARBS is a series of audiovisual conjectures, retorts, and ripostes with improvised music and animation. Each piece creates an interactive environment of veiled implication and sonic innuendo that responds to gesture and audio input in real time. Animations are projected on stage with the performers, responding to their sounds and constituting a key element in a three way barb-fest during the performance. The musicians do not directly control the details of the animations; they improvise with each other, and with the animations.
Birgit Ulher has “established a distinguished grammar of sounds beyond the open trumpet” (jazzdimensions.de). She works mainly on extending the sounding possibilities of the trumpet and has developed her own extended techniques and preparations for producing these sounds. Besides this material research she is especially interested in the relation between sound and silence.
Former Harvestworks Artist In Residence Bill Hsu will work with electronics and real-time animation systems. He builds real-time audio-visual systems that interact with human performers, and uses gestural interfaces to control animation and sound synthesis.

Andrew Drury will employ breath, friction, and pressure point manipulations on a floor tom to elicit distinctly undrumlike textures with an extreme range of frequency and multi-phonics.
Born in Nuremberg, Birgit Ulher studied the visual arts, which still have an important influence on her music. Since moving to Hamburg in 1982 she has been involved in free improvisation and experimental music. She performs solo, with her working ensembles, dancers, visual artists and one-time collaborations with musicians from around the world. Collaborations with Ute Wassermann, Gino Robair, Leonel Kaplan, Christoph Schiller, Heddy Boubaker, Gregory Büttner and Forbes Graham, amongst others. Soloproject ‘Radio Silence No More’. Bill Hsu is an associate professor of computer science at San Francisco State University, where he conducts research and teaches courses in computer architecture and computer music. He has built software tools for synthesis, performance, and real-time control, and collaborated with (among others) Peter van Bergen, John Butcher, James Fei, Gino Robair, Matthew Heckert, Lynn Herschman, and Jeremy Mende. Andrew Drury is a percussionist/composer who navigates a vast range of conventional and experimental idioms. A student of Ed Blackwell, Drury is known for lyrical, inventive drum set work with Frank Lacy, Jason Kao Hwang, Myra Melford, TOTEM>, and others. He also performs on a single floor tom, employing breath and friction with other objects and manipulations, generating a palette of extreme textures, frequencies, and multi-phonics. Drury has appeared in 25 countries and on 40 cds.
