Harvestworks picks up from our 2005 booklet THE EXTENDED INSTRUMENT: an investigation into Sound Art & Contemporary Music to track the current developments of Sound Art including its new global scope, critical discourse and evolving technical tools.
Panelists will address the following topics:
- Curatorial decisions
- Unconventional venues for presentation
- Global scope and artist studies from China, Europe and North America
- A common language to stimulate critical discourse for sound and ephemeral art
- Research and development of new sound diffusion and distribution systems
Presenters
Stephan Moore is a composer, improviser, audio artist, sound designer, teacher, and curator based in Brooklyn and Providence. His creative work currently manifests as electronic studio compositions, solo and group improvisations, sound installation works, scores for collaborative performance pieces, and sound designs for unusual circumstances. Evidence, his long-standing project with Scott Smallwood, has performed widely and released several recordings over the past decade. He also performs with the improvisation quartets Bumpr and Volume(n), and is a frequent collaborator with the performance groups The Nerve Tank and a canary torsi. His company, Isobel Audio, produces unique Hemisphere speakers. Since receiving an Electronic Arts MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2003, where he studied with Pauline Oliveros and Curtis Bahn, he has created custom music software for a number of composers and artists, and taught workshops and numerous college-level courses in composition, programming, sound art and electronic music. He is the vice president of the American Society for Acoustic Ecology, and the curator and artistic director of In The Garden of Sonic Delights at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, a 5-month exhibition of outdoor sound art across Westchester County in 2014. From late 2004 to mid-2010, he performed over 250 concerts with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, serving as a touring musician, sound engineer, and music coordinator. He is currently enrolled in the MEME Ph.D. program at Brown University.
Xiaoying Juliette Yuan is a media arts curator based in New York. She has curated numerous exhibitions, conferences, and workshops for international biennials and festivals, worked with international art fairs, academies, and institutions. As a trilingual scholar, she accomplished a large publication project, “Media Arts Collection” in Beijing, China. As a researcher focusing on curatorial methodology, she is particularly interested in the artistic process of collaborations between artists, scientists and technologists, as well as the curators’ role in such a process.
Yuan holds a Master in Comparative Literature in the University of Paris III (La Sorbonne Nouvelle), is current pursuing her Ph.D. research in Arts and Media at the University of Plymouth, UK
Andrew Horwitz is a curator, critic and producer with over twenty years of experience in the not-for-profit and for-profit creative sectors. He is the founder of Culturebot Arts & Media, Inc. and publisher of Culturebot.org, a website devoted to thought-leading conversations on arts, culture and ideas. From 2010-2013 he worked for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council where he curated The River To River Festival, a free, month-long multidisciplinary festival at sites throughout Lower Manhattan. Previously he worked as Producer at Performance Space 122 and, from 2007-2009, curated the PRELUDE Festival at the Martin E. Segal Theater Center at the Graduate Center at CUNY. He has also worked as Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Foundation for Jewish Culture. He recently received the prestigious Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for his new blog Ephemeral Objects: Art Criticism for the Post-Material World, online at ephemeralobjects.org
Paul Geluso’s work focuses on the theoretical, practical, and artistic aspects of sound recording and reproduction. He is a sound recordist, mixer, and engineer who has been collaborating with musicians and media artists who use sound as a creative medium at Harvestworks since 1992. He has worked in many areas of sound and music production being credited as engineer, producer, composer, and musician on CD and 5.1 surround sound DVD releases in addition to film, video, sound installation, and broadcast television soundtracks. He is currently developing new ways to capture, mix, process, and reproduce 3D audio on multi-channel sound systems. Geluso received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Master of Music in Music Technology from New York University where he is currently on the full-time faculty in the Music Technology program..
Carol Parkinson is the Executive Director of Harvestworks, a digital media arts center located in New York City. Her focus is in the development of experimental artworks that explore sound, data and other emerging technologies. She is the producer of the New York Electronic Art Festival, a series of workshops, concert performances and exhibitions centered on emerging technologies and art. Since 2007, the festival has been presented every other year in New York City. She is a founding member of TELLUS, the Audio Cassette Magazine, a cassette –based magazine of experimental music and sound art published between 1982 – 1996.
About the Installation
Meridian7 presents Intercept Tone/Vacant Level, a multi-channel audio installation inspired by archival recordings of the electromagnetic terrain that captivated early telephone network explorers. As an AIR at Harvestworks, Meridian7 completed three instruments that explored the sonic terrain of analog switching networks punctuated with rhythmic signal pulses, crosstalk, static, messages between the wires. MERIDIAN7 is a solo artist project based in Brooklyn, New York that brings original telephone equipment back to a life of patching signals again by transforming them into instruments modular synthesizers and analog sequencers.
